Project Description Para Los Ninos (PLN) is a pediatric program at the University of New Mexico. The primary function of PLN is to provide medical evaluations for children and adolescents who have been sexually abused and sexually assaulted. All suspected victims of sexual abuse receive comprehensive physical exams. PLN is one of two clinics of its kind in New Mexico and remains the primary 24 hour on call service for pediatric sexual abuse. Educational and community services are a large part of the mission of PLN. Medical students, residents, nurses and other healthcare professionals are mentored by Dr. Renee Ornelas, in our clinics, and in didactic sessions. Dr. Ornelas has a particular interest in supporting the community on child maltreatment issues and is available to the community and legal system to interpret and communicate medical information. PLN staff also collaborates with UNMH Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic and Pediatric Emergency Room, participates in quality assurance, and provides training to a variety of clinicians and community advocates. We have continued to focus on our clinical programs and services, education and training, child advocacy and community service. We have strengthened our clinical services to meet the necessary technical and socio-cultural skills necessary in providing excellent care to children and adolescents. We have expanded our community based training opportunities and experiences. Our commitment to child advocacy and community service is exemplified by our collaboration with community agencies, including law enforcement, the District Attorney's office, and the Children Youth and Families Department. We have developed innovative models with the support from VOCA (Victims of Crime Act), which focuses on interventions for behavioral issues and concerns for adolescent survivors of sexual assault. PLN provides training to professionals, students, and the community. Dr. Ornelas provides training for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, medical providers, social workers, and mental health professionals on the physical and psychosocial dynamics of sexual abuse.
