Project Description Clinical clerkships in PA education are mandated by the accrediting agency, ARC-PA. Communities benefit by having mid-level providers in the clinics to see additional patients. Communities also learn about the PA profession and the educational program at UNM. Mission is to educate NM residents to practice medicine in rural NM. Program lasts for 25 consecutive months with SOM classes in the mornings and PA classes each afternoon. Students are encouraged to practice in NM upon graduation. 9.5 months of clinical clerkships are part of the PA Program curriculum and are located in rural NM to increase chances of students seeking employment in those areas when they graduate. Clerkships also increase public awareness of Physician Assistants and provide mid-level assistance to rural clinics, hospitals and private practice. PA students spend a total of 9 1/2months under the supervision of MD's or PA's throughout NM. At least 4-5 months must be in rural NM.
