Project Description
The University of New Mexico (UNM) Division of Continuing Education Substance Abuse Studies Training Program (SASTP) is specifically designed to recruit, train, and prepare Substance Abuse Counselors for licensure, as well as provide continuing education in the most successful evidenced based treatment practices for those already in related professions. The program seeks to increase the number of liscensed Substance Abuse Counselors, and to improve the quality of treatment statewide. Courses are offered in Albuquerque, and in at least one other location around the state. This year we are in Las Cruces. Next year we will be in Taos. The curriculum results from a partnership between the Department of Psychology credit programs, and workforce development efforts through non-credit programs at UNM Continuing Education. The program is divided into two tracks and designed for two different target populations. The first recruits individuals that are new to the field and are considering a career as a Substance Abuse Counselor. The second is designed to enhance and improve the skills of existing professionals or those that have related experience. Both tracks help prepare students as effective counselors through evidenced based treatment approaches and help them prepare for the licensure in the state of New Mexico. Both tracks are offered on the weekends to allow for participants to meet their weekday employment obligations. Additional flexibility is present in the credit options students have available. Courses may be taken either for academic credit or for CEUs, depending on the needs of the student. We offer the most current training available in the proven and most promising treatment modalities for individuals seeking to become a Licensed Substance Abuse Associate (LSAA) or a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC). Our instructor's credentials offer the best of both worlds: experienced counselors in the field, educators at UNM, and trainers for other top training organizations in the state. Our courses are accepted for continuing education units by the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board. Courses can also be taken for college credit and may be transferred to an Associate Degree or a Bachelor Degree program. We are a National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Approved Education Provider, and therefore, our courses are also accepted for the national NAADAC certification levels.
