Communications English Department

Geographic Area Served

Santa Fe
Project Description
Service learning technical writing course in which students learn client management and communications skills by working with regional non-profit and community-based organizations by completing a writing project for that organization.

Last semester, each student or group of students chose an organization and did a service-learning project, specifically a document creation since it is a writing class, for that organization. For example, one group wrote two grants for the Santa Fe Rape Crisis Center. Another group created 4 brochures for the Pajarito Environmental Education Center on local wildflowers-- the organization now sells it as a money raising opportunity. The results are that students and organizations have the opportunity to work on a communcation they need. The outcome is that students learn client management skills, writing skills, and have an opportunity to put in community service hours.
