Project Description RSLP was developed to help UNM accomplish its mission of civic responsibility, to better educate and inspire its students, to build strong partnerships with communities throughout New Mexico centered on addressing community-identified needs. We believe that participation in the RSLP will encourage our students to persist in their education and complete their degrees because thay will see the relevance of their education and understand better what it means to do the work that practitioners in their disciplines undertake. Clearly, New Mexico has many needs related to environment, health, education, poverty, and economics. By partnering with community groups, RSLP will help provide relevant research for community partners leading to concrete actions that address community needs. RSLP is an academically-based program that engages UNM undergraduates in research projects that are designed collaboratively with community partners. In our ongoing relationships with community partners, we develop service activities that emerge from the collaborative research projects. Students can achieve more grounded learning by working in complex real-life situations. Community partners obtain access to some of the vast resources of UNM as a research institutions. Academic departments will benefit from a pool of students who have a more concrete understanding of the research methods and applications of their disciplines. As a program, RSLP cultivates ongoing collaborative relatinships with community partners. We offer courses taught by RSLP graduate assistants in several disciplines and invite UNM faculty to become part of the program by offering community-based courses that aspire tothe RSLP vision of ongoing collaborative partnership. Eligibility Students must have the prerequisites for the courses offered. Prospective faculty and departments must be willing to offer their courses within the guidelines of the program; primarily, to be willing to get involved in long-term prtnerships with the community outside UNM.
