Project Description A guiding principle of La Meta (inspired by Dr. Ken Gross at the Vermont Mathematics Initiative) is that teachers should be treated as professionals with their own intellectual needs. Through La Meta we hope to improve student achievement in mathematics by improving the content knowledge and mathematical knowledge for teaching of New Mexico middle school mathematics teachers. We have also endeavored to increase university mathematics faculty involvement in teacher education and communication between faculty within and between institutions of higher education in New Mexico. New Mexico's students have not traditionally done well on national mathematics achievement exams. Many students come to institutions of Higher education in New Mexico needing to take remedial mathematics classes. This project provides an opportunity for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to work with teachers to find a solution to this difficult problem. Eligibility Teach middle-grades mathematics (grades 5-9).
