Project Description The Children's Law Center seeks to improve the knowledge and skills of the judges, attorneys, and other professionals and volunteers who work with children and families in the abuse/neglect and juvenile justice legal systems in New Mexico. By providing training, technical assistance and information resources to the professionals and volunteers working in these systems, the Center hopes ultimately to improve outcomes for the children involved. As funding permits, the Children's Law Center develops training curricula and programs, co-sponsors conferences, produces resource materials, develops and maintains listservs, and disseminates new information on an ongoing basis. The Children's Law Center and the Judicial Education Center (also at the Institute of Public Law) co-produce and regularly update the NM Child Welfare Handbook, a legal manual on child abuse and neglect that is used extensively by judges, attorneys and others around the state. The Supreme Courts Court Improvement Project Task Force concluded some years ago that improving the knowledge and skills of the professionals and volunteers who work in the abuse/neglect legal system, including judges and attorneys, was critical to achieving safety, permanency, and well-being for children who come into the care and custody of the state. The Institute of Public Law at the School of Law was asked to house a children's law center to meet the need for training, technical assistance and information resources in the child welfare and juvenile justice communities. Eligibility Eligibility varies on the training event. Most are open to the public but some are open only to specific audiences. For example, a training for parents' attorneys would be open to attorneys who represent parents in one or more cases a year. The NM Child Welfare Handbook is available to the public, without charge on the Internet and at cost in hard-copy. The two listservs hosted by the CLC at present are available to attorneys for children and parents, respectively. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
